KUALA LUMPUR, 26 October 2009 – Asia-Pacific’s leading payment solutions provider GHL Systems Berhad (GHL Systems) has introduced Malaysia’s first portable GPRS payment terminal with biometric capabilities.
This launch takes place after GHL Systems’ landmark appointment as Ingenico International’s Centre of Excellence for biometric technology, as well as the distributor of Ingenico’s Bio POS terminal in Malaysia. In addition to this, GHL Systems has also obtained approval from the National Registration Department of Malaysia to access documentation and utilise the memory mapping function for MyKad identification cards.
GHL Systems’ Chief Operating Officer, Chan Chun Fee, said: “We’re indeed pleased to deliver a groundbreaking solution that effectively combines our expertise in smartcard or chip-based payment solutions with biometric authentication for higher-level security.”

“This solution leverages on our extensive payment experience in the South East Asian region since 1999 and MyKad application development on behalf of Malaysian banks since 2004, which has accorded us recognition as the region’s leading payment solutions and service provider,” added Chan.
Christian Mugnier, Ingenico’s Regional Director for South East Asia, said: “Malaysia has been a keen adopter of innovative technologies in recent years, and the latest introduction of this GPRS-enabled portable biometric-cum-payment terminal solution demonstrates that the market is indeed ready for higher value-added payment solutions for greater efficiency.”
“The biometric-cum-payment terminal solution features the latest optical sensor in biometrics technology from Sagem Sécurité, as well as a powerful processor that provides accuracy and excellent performance for faster authentication and/or payment transactions. The solution is based on PCI-PED certified terminals, which is an important criterion for secure card payment by international banks,” continued Mugnier.Previous solutions comprised of standalone biometric or payment terminals.
Standalone biometric terminals typically reach near-100% utilization rates in the first year of their roll-out, followed by lower utilization rates of up to 10% in subsequent years. Standalone payment terminals, meanwhile, typically reach full utilization rates in the first year, with subsequent years surpassing the previous year’s transactions in line with growing businesses.
The combined functionalities in the biometric-cum-payment terminal solution results in a solution that optimizes utilization rates, therefore providing better returns on investment for users. Furthermore, it makes for more efficient use of counter-top space at the point of acceptance, such as merchant point-of-sales, banks and government departments.
Chan added: “The new solution also expands the network for GHL Systems to make biometric solutions more widely available in Malaysia. In the past, our main focus was to work with banks to provide MyKad and smartcard-based requirements. With this new solution, we will be able to collaborate with systems integrators to further promote the usage of MyKad for authentication amongst our target markets, be it in the public or private sector.”
“All said, we believe that the introduction of this new biometric-cum-payment solution places GHL Systems in a prime position to support the Government’s call for electronic payments (such as credit, e-Debit or e-Purse) in a secure manner,” concluded Chan.
